The Digbeth High St needs seriously sorting - it gives Digbeth the most unwelcoming entrance - no one would look at the High Street from the back of Selfridges and think 'ooohhh...there looks nice and interesting with lots of stuff going on, I think I'll wander on down'. That's a pity because it's very nice, very interesting with tonnes of stuff going on! Once you veer off the High Street to places like the Custard Factory Digbeth's great but the pedestrian journey there is horrible and nothing along the way indicates the great stuff out of view.
However in regenerating Digbeth we do have to take care to preserve its unique identity. I wasn't sure about about stating the low-rise warehouses have 'little architectural merit'. It may be a personal thing, but I think they characterise Digbeth and actually quite like them. I love their 'dragons teeth' rooflines and the industrial history they illustrate.
But Digbeth streets could be brighter, cleaner and friendlier. They're often totally deserted at night in an eerie, ghost-town like way and the rubbish floats accross them like tumbleweed.
